Ardbeg Distillery
Ardbeg Distillery stands on the south coast of Islay, producing some of the most heavily peated single malt Scotch whiskies in the world. Though whisky was made on the site from as early as 1794 — and possibly earlier under illicit licence — the distillery was commercially founded in 1815. After prolonged closure and near-abandonment through the 1980s and early 1990s, Ardbeg was revived by Glenmorangie plc in 1997 and has since become a global cult brand. It is now owned by LVMH via Glenmorangie. Water is sourced from Loch Uigeadail. Annual production capacity is approximately 1.25 million litres, with around 60 employees.

History
Illicit distilling took place on the Ardbeg farm from around 1794. The distillery was commercially founded in 1815 by the MacDougall family, who operated it through the 19th century. Ardbeg changed hands several times across the early 20th century. In 1979 Hiram Walker took control. Production was halted from 1981 to 1989, and the distillery then operated only intermittently until full closure in 1996 — a period during which it deteriorated significantly and all but a skeleton staff remained.
The rescue came in 1997 when Glenmorangie plc purchased and reopened the distillery, bringing it back to full production and investing heavily in its revival. The Old Kiln Café was opened to welcome visitors. In 2004 LVMH — the French luxury conglomerate — acquired Glenmorangie, bringing Ardbeg into one of the world's largest luxury groups alongside Glenmorangie, Belvedere vodka, and numerous other premium brands. Under LVMH's ownership, the Ardbeg Committee fan club was established and annual "Ardbeg Day" limited releases became a global whisky event. In July 2022 the distillery sold a 1975 vintage cask for £16 million — a world record for cask pricing. Ardbeg has been named World Whisky of the Year multiple times (2008, 2009, 2010) and the Ardbeg Galileo won World's Best Single Malt Whisky in 2013.
Production
Water is drawn from Loch Uigeadail, the same dark moorland loch that inspired the name of the distillery's most celebrated bottling. Barley is malted at the Port Ellen maltings on Islay to very high phenol levels — among the highest used by any commercial distillery. The still house runs two wash stills (18,000 L each) and two spirit stills (17,000 L each), giving an annual capacity of approximately 1.25 million litres. Maturation takes place in a combination of ex-bourbon American oak hogsheads and barrels, with sherry cask finishing used selectively for expressions such as Uigeadail.
Tasting Character
Ardbeg is paradoxical among heavily peated whiskies: the smoke is enormous — among the most intense in the category — yet it is balanced by an equally assertive sweetness from careful still management and maturation. Rather than leading with salt, brine, and TCP (as Laphroaig does), Ardbeg delivers vanilla cream, dark chocolate, espresso, and citrus zest behind its wall of peat. This quality has been described by fans as "the peaty paradox." The Ten Year Old is the benchmark: restrained at 46% ABV with perfect integration of smoke and fruit. Uigeadail adds sherry richness; Corryvreckan (57.1% ABV) is emphatically for devotees of extreme whisky.
