Auchentoshan is the only Scottish distillery to triple-distil every drop it produces, creating single malts of distinctive delicacy and freshness. Located at the foot of the Kilpatrick Hills near Dalmuir in West Dunbartonshire — on the edge of Greater Glasgow — it has made Lowland single malt in this manner since 1823. Water is drawn from Loch Katrine for production and Loch Cochno for cooling. The distillery is owned by Suntory Global Spirits (formerly Beam Suntory), following the Suntory acquisition of Morrison Bowmore Distillers in 1994. Annual production capacity is 1.8 million litres.

History

John Bulloch, a corn merchant, founded the distillery in 1823. From the outset triple distillation was practised: in 1823 a third "Intermediate Still" was sourced from an engineer named Thorne, pushing spirit to 81% ABV off the final still — a purity that defines the Auchentoshan character to this day. The Clydebank Blitz during World War II caused collateral damage to the distillery when decoy lights on the nearby A82 road attracted Luftwaffe bombers. The distillery was completely rebuilt in 1969 by Eadie Cairns. Stanley P. Morrison acquired Auchentoshan in 1984 through his Morrison Bowmore company. Suntory invested in Morrison Bowmore in 1989 and acquired 100% in 1994. Following the 2014 merger of Beam Inc. and Suntory Holdings, the distillery moved into Suntory Global Spirits. The oldest known expression from the distillery was a 50-year-old bottled in 2008 from a cask distilled in 1957.

Production

Water for production comes from Loch Katrine; Loch Cochno provides cooling water. The still room runs one wash still, one intermediate still ("middle still"), and one spirit still — the triple-still configuration that defines the distillery. Triple distillation pushes the final spirit off at approximately 81% ABV, significantly above the typical 65–70% ABV from double-distilled Scotch. This removes most heavy compounds, creating an exceptionally light, clean new-make. The distillery uses unpeated malt, allowing the delicate character to express itself fully. Maturation is primarily in ex-bourbon barrels and ex-sherry butts. Annual capacity is 1.8 million litres.

Tasting Character

The hallmark of triple distillation at 81% ABV is vibrancy and freshness — clean fruit, citrus, and gentle cream with just a hint of spice. The different expressions show how cask choice modifies this light canvas: American Oak brings vanilla, coconut, peach, and grapefruit; the 12 Year Old Double Cask adds sweet pastry, lemon zest, and tangerine; the Three Wood (bourbon, Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez sherry) introduces blackcurrants, plums, hazelnuts, and cinnamon; the 14 Year Old Sherry Cask is almonds, sultanas, and burnt toffee; the 18 Year Old turns to tobacco leaf, green tea, and budding flowers. The common thread is a light, elegant base beneath whatever the cask contributes.
