Bunnahabhain Distillery
The most northerly distillery on Islay, founded in 1881 near Port Askaig on the Sound of Islay. Bunnahabhain (pronounced "boo-na-HA-venn," from the Scottish Gaelic for "mouth of the river") is unusual among Islay distilleries for producing predominantly unpeated single malt, contrasting sharply with the island's global reputation for heavy peat smoke. The village of Bunnahabhain was built alongside the distillery to house workers in the late 19th century and remains one of the most remotely sited settlements on the island. Now owned by Distell Group Limited, a subsidiary of Heineken N.V., Bunnahabhain produces both unpeated and peated expressions, with the unpeated Stiùireadair and the peated Toiteach a Dhà forming the core of its current range.

History
Bunnahabhain was established in 1881 near Port Askaig by the Islay Distillery Company, one of several distilleries founded during the late-Victorian whisky boom. The remote northern location — accessible only by a single-track road or by sea — necessitated the construction of an entire village to house workers, a distinctive feature that makes Bunnahabhain one of the few Scottish distilleries to have shaped the local landscape so comprehensively.
In 1887 the distillery was taken over by the Highland Distilleries Company, which would control it for over a century. For most of its history, Bunnahabhain contributed its whisky heavily to blends — the Robertson & Baxter partnership used it extensively — with single malt sales growing only in more recent decades. The distillery was acquired by Burn Stewart Distillers in 2003, ending the Highland Distilleries era. In 2014 Burn Stewart was merged with Distell Group Limited, a major South African beverage company, which subsequently became a subsidiary of Heineken N.V.
Under the current ownership Bunnahabhain has expanded its single malt presence significantly, launching the Stiùireadair as a sherried NAS expression and the Toiteach a Dhà as a peated counterpart to the traditional unpeated range, reaching into new market segments while maintaining the distillery's distinctive character.
Production
Bunnahabhain draws its distilling water from the Margadale River, which rises on the slopes above the distillery before reaching the Sound of Islay. The plant operates two wash stills of 30,000 litres each and two spirit stills of 15,000 litres each — unusually large stills for Islay, which contribute to the lighter, more delicate spirit character. Annual production capacity is approximately 3.5 million litres of pure alcohol. The core range is produced from unpeated malt; peated expressions (Toiteach a Dhà) use peated malt to approximately 35–40 ppm. Maturation uses a combination of ex-bourbon barrels and ex-sherry casks, with sherry wood particularly prominent in the Stiùireadair.
Tasting Character
Bunnahabhain's unpeated house style is one of the most distinctive on Islay: creamy and maritime rather than smoky, with notes of coastal brine, dried fruit, caramel, toasted nuts, and vanilla from ex-bourbon maturation. The large still size creates a lighter, more approachable spirit than many Islay distilleries, and the absence of peat allows the maritime influence of the Sound of Islay to come through clearly. The Stiùireadair (Gaelic for "helmsman") adds a sherried richness — dried fruit, creamy caramel, sea salt, and gentle spice — making it a more robust and complex expression than the classic 12 Year Old. The Toiteach a Dhà ("peaty place of water" in Gaelic) offers a peated counterpart, delivering Islay smoke in Bunnahabhain's characteristic creamy, maritime framework.
