Cardhu Distillery
Cardhu Distillery in Knockando, Banffshire, is one of Speyside's most historically significant distilleries and one of the most iconic in the Scotch whisky world. Founded as a farm distillery in 1824 by whisky smuggler John Cumming and his wife Helen, it owes its commercial fame to the remarkable women who built its reputation. Helen Cumming famously raised a red flag to warn neighbours of visiting excise officers while selling whisky from the farmhouse window; her daughter-in-law Elizabeth Cumming expanded and ultimately sold the distillery to Johnnie Walker & Sons in 1893, cementing Cardhu's role as the malt heart of Johnnie Walker blended Scotch. Today the distillery operates as a Diageo Brand Home and is a popular stop on the Speyside Malt Whisky Trail.

History
John Cumming began distilling illegally at Cardhu farm on Mannoch Hill above the River Spey in the early 19th century, obtaining a legal distilling licence in 1824. The farm's location — remote but fertile — provided good barley and clean water. His wife Helen became the driving force: she developed relationships with customers, managed sales, and, according to tradition, would raise a red flag from the farmhouse to warn neighbouring farmers of approaching excise officers, then serve the exciseman bread and whisky to distract him while the illicit stills were hidden.
Their daughter-in-law Elizabeth Cumming continued and expanded the business after John's death. In 1885 Elizabeth relocated the distillery to a new site on the same land, tripling production capacity with new stills; the old stills were sold to William Grant, who used them to equip his new Glenfiddich Distillery. In 1893 Elizabeth sold Cardhu to Johnnie Walker & Sons on the condition that the Cumming family retained day-to-day management of the distillery — a remarkable negotiating position for a woman in Victorian Scotland. The distillery was rebuilt and modernised under Walker ownership. The company joined The Distillers Company in 1925 and the stills were expanded to six (three wash, three spirit) by 1970 during a major modernisation programme.
Cardhu became part of Diageo following the 1997 Guinness–Grand Metropolitan merger. In 2003 Diageo controversially proposed converting Cardhu's single malt to a vatted malt labelled "pure malt," citing supply constraints; following significant industry and consumer backlash, the move was reversed in 2006. The distillery draws water from sources in the Mannoch Hills and the Lyne Burn, mixed in 1970 when production was expanded. Cardhu celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2024 with a special limited edition bottling.
Production
Cardhu draws distilling water from the Mannoch Hills and Lyne Burn. The distillery operates three wash stills and three spirit stills, with an annual production capacity of approximately 3.5 million litres of pure alcohol. Production is predominantly unpeated, reflecting the light, fruited Speyside house style. The majority of Cardhu's production goes into Johnnie Walker blended Scotch; the remainder is reserved for single malt bottlings under the Cardhu brand.
Tasting Character
Cardhu produces a medium-bodied, smooth, and distinctly fruit-forward Speyside malt. Tasting notes centre on ripe orchard fruit — sweet green apple, crisp pear — alongside citrus blossom, fresh-cut grass, and gentle mellow cereal sweetness. The character is approachable and elegant rather than heavily sherried or peated, reflecting its primary identity as a blending heart malt; the fruitiness and cleanliness that make it ideal for Johnnie Walker also make it a very accessible single malt. The Gold Reserve adds depth from oak while maintaining the house freshness; the Amber Rock offers a warmer, more honeyed variant.
