Dufftown Distillery
Dufftown Distillery is a Diageo-owned Speyside distillery in the town of Dufftown itself — often called the "whisky capital of Scotland" — where five other distilleries (including The Balvenie, Glenfiddich, Glendullan, Kininvie, and Mortlach) also operate. Built in 1895 on the site of a former meal mill beside the Dullan Water, Dufftown was one of several distilleries constructed during the late-Victorian whisky boom. Since 2006, all of its output has been sold as The Singleton of Dufftown — a brand deliberately designed for European markets as the accessible, fruit-forward face of Speyside whisky. No visitor centre currently operates, and the distillery remains a production facility rather than a tourist destination.

History
The Dufftown-Glenlivet Distillery Company founded the distillery in 1895, with blender Peter MacKenzie as the principal backer. The site — a former meal mill on the Dullan Water — was an ideal choice, with water, location, and existing infrastructure all favouring a distillery build. By 1902 the whisky had found favour at the Court of King Edward VII, an early mark of quality recognition.
Over the 20th century the distillery passed through several corporate hands as the Scotch whisky industry consolidated. It became part of Bell's — the famous blending house — providing malt for Arthur Bell & Sons blended Scotch. The distillery subsequently entered the Distillers Company Limited fold, eventually becoming part of Diageo when DCL merged with Guinness and Grand Metropolitan.
The pivotal moment in Dufftown's modern identity came in 2006, when Diageo launched The Singleton brand across its distillery portfolio. Dufftown was designated as The Singleton for European markets — while Glendullan serves North America and Glen Ord serves Asian markets. The Singleton brand family strategy allowed each distillery to be tailored to regional taste preferences, with Dufftown's expression positioned as accessible and fruit-led for European consumers. The range has been a consistent award winner in its segment.
Production
Dufftown operates three wash stills (13,100 litres each) and three spirit stills (15,300 litres each), for a total of six pot stills. Annual production capacity is approximately 4,000,000 litres of pure alcohol. Water is sourced from Jock's Well in the Conval Hills. Production primarily serves the Singleton of Dufftown brand, with a portion also contributing to Diageo blended Scotch whiskies.
Tasting Character
The Singleton of Dufftown is crafted to be approachable, food-friendly, and immediately rewarding — deliberately accessible rather than challenging. The house style is nutty and lightly spiced, with a rounded sweetness showing dried fruit, soft toffee, and gentle vanilla. The 12 Year Old (the entry expression) is clean and bright; the 15 Year Old develops more complexity with oak influence; the 18 Year Old delivers a richer, more complex character with additional dried fruit and warmth. The range avoids extreme peat or heavy Sherry influence in favour of broad, immediate appeal.
