Glen Elgin Distillery
Glen Elgin Distillery is a Diageo-owned Speyside distillery built in 1898 by William Simpson and James Carle in Fogwatt, near the village of Glen Elgin, south of Elgin in Moray. Founded during the final years of the late-Victorian whisky boom, Glen Elgin has been closely associated with the White Horse blended Scotch since 1936, when it was acquired by Scottish Malt Distillers, a subsidiary of The Distillers Company. White Horse has used Glen Elgin malt as a key component ever since. The distillery's single malt has been officially bottled only in a 12 Year Old expression under the Diageo Flora & Fauna series — making it a highly accessible introduction to a honeyed, fruity Speyside style that is well worth seeking out.

History
William Simpson and James Carle built Glen Elgin Distillery in 1898, constructed to take advantage of the extraordinary demand for Scotch whisky at the height of the Victorian boom. The timing proved unfortunate: the whisky market crashed in 1899 following the Pattison Crisis — when the high-profile blending firm Pattison, Elder & Co collapsed spectacularly — and many new distilleries struggled through the subsequent years of oversupply and economic contraction. Glen Elgin survived, but changed hands several times in the early 20th century as the industry consolidated.
In 1936 Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD), a subsidiary of The Distillers Company Limited, acquired Glen Elgin. This was the pivotal moment in the distillery's commercial identity: from this point, Glen Elgin's malt was incorporated into White Horse blended Scotch, one of the most important Scotch brands of the era. SMD and its parent company later became United Distillers in 1987, before merging into Diageo in 1997. Since 1977, in parallel with its blending role, the distillery has been releasing a single malt expression.
Production
Glen Elgin operates three wash stills (7,000 litres each) and three spirit stills (8,000 litres each), for a total of six pot stills. Annual production capacity is approximately 1,830,000 litres. Water is sourced from Millbuies Loch Springs. The six-still configuration is notable for a distillery of this size and reflects the investment made in Glen Elgin's capacity during the 20th century expansion of the White Horse blending operation.
Tasting Character
Glen Elgin is a honeyed, fruity, and lightly floral Speyside malt. The 12 Year Old Flora & Fauna expression shows baked apple, sweet honey, fresh cereal, and gentle oak spice on the nose, followed by a soft, rounded palate with good weight and a clean, malty finish. The style is described as gently sweet and approachable — classic White Horse house profile, without the peat or heavy Sherry influence that might distract from the blend. It is drier and more floral than many sherried Speysides, with a delicate elegance that rewards attention. The distillery formerly produced a 16 Year Old, 20 Year Old, and 32 Year Old, though only the 12 Year Old is currently available as an official release.
