The Glenrothes Distillery is a venerable Speyside distillery situated on the banks of the Burn of Rothes in the town of Rothes, Moray. Founded in 1879, it produces some of the richest and most sherry-influenced single malts in Speyside — a style rooted in meticulous cask selection rather than heavy peating or exotic finishing. Owned by Berry Bros. & Rudd, one of Britain's oldest wine and spirits merchants, The Glenrothes is not open to the public: visits are by private invitation only, lending the distillery an air of exclusivity that mirrors its premium positioning. Annual production capacity stands at 5.2 million litres across five wash stills and five spirit stills.

History

Construction of the Glenrothes distillery began in 1878 under James Stuart & Co., who ran into financial difficulties before completion. The project was completed with the backing of William Grant and Robert Dick. The first spirit ran off the stills on 28 December 1879 — the same night the Tay Bridge at Dundee collapsed in a violent storm, killing all 75 passengers on the Edinburgh to Dundee train crossing it. The date has become an indelible part of Glenrothes folklore.

The distillery's early decades were eventful: a fire during expansion work in December 1897 caused significant damage, and a serious explosion occurred in 1903. The most dramatic incident came in 1922, when a fire in Warehouse Number One destroyed approximately 200,000 imperial gallons (910,000 litres) of maturing whisky — one of the largest single losses of Scotch whisky stock on record. A further fire in 1962 enabled a substantial expansion, and by 1982 the distillery had been rebuilt with five wash stills and five spirit stills, the configuration still used today.

For most of the 20th century The Glenrothes operated as part of the Highland Distilleries group. The Edrington Group acquired a controlling interest in 1999. However, the brand had long been associated with Berry Bros. & Rudd, which had run a celebrated vintage bottling programme for Glenrothes since the 1990s — each bottle presenting the whisky as a "vintage" from a specific year rather than an age statement, a radical departure from Scotch industry convention. In 2010 the Edrington Group sold the brand outright to Berry Bros. & Rudd, reuniting ownership of the brand and the business that had championed it. The distillery itself remains under Edrington ownership as of 2026.

Production

The distillery draws water from an on-site spring fed by the surrounding hills. Five wash stills and five spirit stills produce 5.2 million litres of pure alcohol per year. The tall, swan-neck stills encourage a high degree of copper contact, producing a clean, fruity new make spirit that matures beautifully. The house approach to maturation centres on careful cask selection — sherry-seasoned European oak casks are prized, though American oak is also used. The distillery stores maturing stock at multiple warehouses.

Tasting Character

The Glenrothes produces a rich, full-fruited, and characteristically sherried Speyside single malt. The swan-neck stills create a clean, fruity new make that accepts sherry cask influence with particular grace. Signature notes across the range include ripe red berries, candied citrus peel, stone fruit (plum, cherry), vanilla cream, baking spice (cinnamon, ginger), and a warm, resinous oak finish. The sherry cask influence provides depth and dried-fruit complexity — raisin, sultana, and Christmas cake — without overwhelming the fruit-forward character. Older expressions develop more pronounced dried-fruit richness and a luxurious, full-bodied texture.
