Strathisla Distillery
Strathisla Distillery in Keith, Moray, is one of Scotland's oldest operating distilleries, founded in 1786 by George Taylor and Alexander Milne as the "Milltown Distillery" on the banks of the River Isla. It is recognised as the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Scottish Highlands. Strathisla is the spiritual home and primary single malt heart of Chivas Brothers' Chivas Regal blended Scotch whisky, and its distinctive twin pagoda roofline — reflected in the mill pond below — is one of the most photographed distillery images in Scotland. Owned by Pernod Ricard through Chivas Brothers, Strathisla holds an important place on the Malt Whisky Trail.

History
George Taylor and Alexander Milne established the distillery in 1786 on the banks of the River Isla in Keith, originally naming it the Milltown Distillery after the agricultural milling tradition of the area. The distillery was established as an alternative livelihood as the local flax-dressing industry declined, reflecting the economic diversification underway in northeast Scotland at the time.
A devastating fire in 1879 destroyed much of the original structure. The distillery was rebuilt and extended, producing the picturesque cluster of stone buildings with twin pagoda ventilators that stands today. The reflection of those pagodas in the mill pond below has become one of Scottish whisky's most iconic images.
In 1950, entrepreneur James Barclay acquired the distillery for £71,000 on behalf of the Seagram Company — a price that now seems extraordinarily modest for a property of such historic and commercial significance. Chivas Brothers, a Seagram subsidiary, implemented modernisation and expansion during their stewardship, with a particular focus on increasing capacity to meet Chivas Regal's global demand. In 2001, Pernod Ricard acquired Seagram's entire whisky operation, making Strathisla part of the Pernod Ricard family through Chivas Brothers.
Dunnage Warehouse No. 3 on the site has held maturing casks for over 200 years, making it one of the oldest continuously used maturation facilities in Scotland. Strathisla is a key stop on the Speyside Malt Whisky Trail, one of the most visited distilleries in the region.
Production
Strathisla operates two wash stills and two spirit stills, with an annual production capacity of approximately 2.4 million litres. Water is drawn from the Broomhill Spring, a source of exceptional purity. Traditional worm tub condensers are used, which produce a heavier, more oily spirit than modern shell-and-tube condensers — directly contributing to the rich, full-bodied character of Strathisla single malt that makes it so valuable as the heart of Chivas Regal.
Tasting Character
Strathisla produces a rich, smooth, and full-bodied Speyside single malt with notes of dried fruit, dark berry, Christmas spice, malt sweetness, and a honeyed warmth. The worm-tub condensers and slow, careful distillation create a heavy spirit that rewards long maturation. The 12 Year Old single malt expresses this character in its purest form, primarily matured in American White Oak and ex-bourbon casks. As a blending component in Chivas Regal, Strathisla provides the rounded, fruity heart around which the blend is constructed.
