Bowmore Distillery
Islay's oldest licensed distillery, established in 1779 by local merchant John P. Simson on the shores of Loch Indaal in the town of Bowmore. One of very few Scottish distilleries still maintaining traditional floor maltings, which account for approximately 30% of the distillery's barley requirements — the remainder supplied by Simpson's of Dumfries & Galloway. Owned since 1994 by Suntory Global Spirits (a subsidiary of Suntory Holdings of Japan) through Morrison Bowmore Distillers Ltd, Bowmore sits in the middle ground of the Islay peating spectrum — moderate smoke balanced by a broad palette of citrus, honey, and maritime character. It is one of the most recognised Islay single malt brands worldwide and a centrepiece of the annual Fèis Ìle whisky festival.

History
Bowmore's history begins in 1779 when a local merchant, John P. Simson, established a distillery in the town of Bowmore on the eastern shore of Loch Indaal. The Simson family operated the distillery for several decades before it passed to a succession of owners during the 19th century, most notably the Mutter family — merchants of German descent who managed the distillery for much of the Victorian era and developed its commercial reach. The distillery closed during the upheaval of the First World War in 1915, reopening in 1925 under J.B. Sheriff & Co. In 1950 it was acquired by William Grigor & Son Ltd.
The transformative moment came in 1963 when Stanley P. Morrison formed Morrison Bowmore Distillers Ltd and acquired the distillery. Morrison brought a serious investment in quality and brand-building that laid the foundations for Bowmore's international reputation. In 1994 the Japanese distilling company Suntory purchased Morrison Bowmore, bringing the full resources of Japan's largest spirits group to bear on the distillery's global expansion. Under Suntory — and its successor Suntory Global Spirits — Bowmore has maintained its traditional floor maltings and its position as one of Islay's most celebrated distilleries.
The distillery is famously used for an unconventional purpose: waste heat from the distillation process warms a public swimming pool housed in a former whisky warehouse, a community benefit that has become part of Bowmore's identity.
Production
Bowmore draws its distilling water from the River Laggan on Islay, which provides soft, peated water ideal for whisky production. The distillery operates two wash stills and two spirit stills, with an annual production capacity of approximately 2 million litres. Traditional floor maltings produce malt peated to approximately 25–30 ppm, contributing the moderate smoke character that defines Bowmore's house style. Fermentation uses wooden washbacks for a longer, more flavoursome fermentation. Maturation takes place in a combination of first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and sherry butts in the famous No. 1 Vaults — Scotland's oldest Scotch whisky maturation warehouse, built into the seawall of the town and influenced by the sea air of Loch Indaal year-round.
Tasting Character
Bowmore occupies the middle ground of the Islay peating spectrum — lighter in smoke than Laphroaig, Ardbeg, or Lagavulin, but more emphatic than Bunnahabhain. The moderate 25–30 ppm peat level allows a broad flavour spectrum to emerge: bright citrus (lemon, orange peel, occasional tropical fruit such as pineapple and mango), honeyed sweetness, vanilla from ex-bourbon casks, and a pronounced maritime character of sea salt, brine, and fresh coastal air. The house style is described as bold yet sweet and clear in its expression. The 12 Year Old offers the accessible, balanced entry point; the 18 and 21 Year Old expressions add sherry cask complexity and greater depth of fruit.
