Cragganmore Distillery
Cragganmore Distillery sits in Ballindalloch, Banffshire, in the heart of Speyside, beside the Craggan Burn. Founded in 1869 by the legendary John Smith — a distiller who had previously managed The Macallan, The Glenlivet, and several other distilleries — Cragganmore was the first Speyside distillery to use railway transport, connecting to the Strathspey Railway to bring in raw materials and ship out finished product. Today, owned by Diageo, it is selected to represent Speyside in the original Classic Malts of Scotland range. Whisky writer Michael Jackson famously described it as having "the most complex aroma of any malt." The visitor centre is currently closed; production continues normally.

History
John Smith founded Cragganmore in 1869 on land leased from Sir George Macpherson-Grant of Ballindalloch Estate. The site was carefully chosen for two reasons: the quality of the Craggan Burn's water and, crucially, access to the newly built Strathspey Railway — making Cragganmore the first Speyside distillery to exploit rail transport for its operations. Smith was an experienced distiller with a formidable reputation, having previously managed The Macallan, The Glenlivet, Wishaw, and other distilleries.
Smith died in 1886, and ownership passed to his widow and then to his son Gordon Smith. The Macpherson-Grant family at Ballindalloch Estate retained a significant share of the business across subsequent decades. In 1923 Peter Mackie acquired the distillery alongside the Ballindalloch Estate's interest, before his share passed to The Distillers Company. The Macpherson-Grant family retained their 50% stake until 1965. The distillery subsequently became part of United Distillers and ultimately Diageo, which acquired it in 1997.
Cragganmore's selection for the Classic Malts of Scotland series in 1988 brought it international recognition as the Speyside representative in that pioneering portfolio, cementing its status as a benchmark regional malt. Current master distiller is Laura Vernon.
Production
Cragganmore operates two wash stills and two spirit stills, giving a total of four pot stills. Annual production capacity stands at approximately 1,520,000 litres of pure alcohol. Water is drawn from the Craggan Burn. The spirit stills are unique in Scottish distilling: they have flat tops rather than the standard domed head, and are relatively short in stature — a design feature that concentrates flavour by limiting copper contact and producing a heavier, more complex spirit. The distillery previously used worm tub condensers, which contribute to the characteristic richness.
Tasting Character
Cragganmore is celebrated above all for aromatic complexity — its distinctive flat-topped spirit stills and traditional production methods produce a whisky with layers of dried fruit, heather honey, floral notes, and a herbal, slightly piney quality unusual among Speyside malts. Michael Jackson's description of "the most complex aroma of any malt" has followed the distillery for decades. The 12 Year Old — the core expression at 40% ABV — shows baked apple, raisin, oak spice, and a richly rounded palate with subtle smoke and an intriguing herbal finish. The complexity rewards slow, contemplative sipping rather than casual drinking.
