Glen Spey Distillery

Speyside, ScotlandEst. 1878

Glen Spey Distillery is a small Diageo-owned Speyside distillery in Rothes, built in 1878 by corn merchant James Stuart & Co. as an oatmeal mill before being converted to whisky distillation. From an early date it became a key supplier to Justerini & Brooks (J&B), and today remains one of the principal malt components in the J&B blend. Glen Spey shares the town of Rothes with Glen Grant Distillery, The Glenrothes Distillery, Speyburn, and the now-closed Caperdonich. The only owner-bottled single malt is the 12 Year Old in Diageo's Flora & Fauna series.

History

James Stuart founded the Mill of Rothes in 1878 as an oatmeal mill; whisky distillation equipment was subsequently added and it became a working distillery. In 1887 the operation was sold to W. & A. Gilbey of London — the gin and spirits merchants — who had identified the spring water at Dorie's Well as ideal for producing the style of light Scotch required by Justerini & Brooks. The same water source was later used at the nearby Auchroisk Distillery, also built to serve the J&B blend.

Production capacity was significantly expanded in 1970 from two to four stills under International Distillers and Vintners ownership, improving the distillery's output while maintaining the light, clean character required by J&B. In 1998, International Distillers & Vintners merged with United Distillers to form United Distillers & Vintners, the spirits division of the newly formed Diageo. Glen Spey has since remained in Diageo's portfolio as a largely silent but significant contributor to one of the world's most popular blended Scotch whiskies.

Production

Glen Spey is a compact distillery operating 2 wash stills and 2 spirit stills. Water comes from Dorie's Well, the same spring source shared with Auchroisk. The spirit style was deliberately designed around J&B's requirement for a light, clean, nutty Scotch — one that would not overpower the delicate blend profile. Purifier pipes on the stills help strip heavier congeners. Almost all production is directed into J&B blended Scotch.

Tasting Character

Glen Spey is a light, nutty, and malty Speyside malt with subtle fruity and nutty notes and a gentle grassy, slightly herbal quality. The spirit style was specifically tailored to the J&B blend's requirement for a light, clean Scotch with good depth on the palate. A gentle hint of smoke has been detected in some older independent bottlings. The 12 Year Old Flora & Fauna expression reveals a soft, balanced malt with malt biscuit, light honey, and a dry nutty finish.
