Strathmill Distillery

Speyside, ScotlandEst. 1891

Strathmill Distillery is a small Speyside distillery in Keith, Moray, converted from a historic corn mill in 1891 during the great Scotch whisky boom of the 1890s. Owned by Diageo and operated primarily to supply malt for the J&B blended Scotch whisky, Strathmill produces a light, sweet, and nutty spirit ideally suited to blending. Despite being in the same town as Strathisla Distillery, Strathmill is the only Keith distillery in Diageo's portfolio. It is not open to visitors and has no public website.

History

The site's milling history begins in 1823 when A.G. Johnstone established a corn mill on the banks of a local water source in Keith, operating it under the name "Strathisla Mills." The mill processed grain for the surrounding agricultural community for nearly seven decades. When the boom conditions of the early 1890s swept through the Scotch whisky industry — driven by blenders' insatiable demand for malt whisky — the Strathisla Mills site presented an ideal conversion opportunity, with its existing infrastructure and water access.

Conversion to a whisky distillery was completed in 1891. The distillery operated under the name Glenisla-Glenlivet for its first three years, a naming convention common at the time as producers sought to attach their spirit to the prestige of the Glenlivet appellation.

In 1895, W. & A. Gilbey — the London gin producers who were expanding aggressively into Scotch — acquired the distillery and renamed it Strathmill, a name that acknowledged the grain mill heritage of the site while asserting a distinct identity. Under Gilbey's ownership the distillery became an important supplier of malt for blending. Gilbey's passed through successive corporate mergers: to International Distillers & Vintners (IDV), then to United Distillers & Vintners (formed in 1998 when Guinness merged with Grand Metropolitan to create Diageo). Strathmill has been a Diageo distillery ever since, integrated into the production portfolio that supplies the J&B blend — one of the world's best-selling blended Scotch whiskies.

The distillery underwent modernisation during the 20th century. Today it operates two wash stills and two spirit stills within seven on-site warehouses (five traditional dunnage, two racked), with an annual capacity of approximately 1.8 million litres.

Production

Strathmill operates two wash stills and two spirit stills. Annual production capacity stands at approximately 1.8 million litres of pure alcohol. Water is drawn from local springs in the Keith area. Seven warehouses — five dunnage and two racked — hold the maturing casks on site. The distillery uses worm tub condensers, which produce a slightly heavier spirit than the industry-standard shell-and-tube condensers. The great majority of production is destined for J&B blended Scotch whisky, with only occasional single malt releases reaching consumers.

Tasting Character

Strathmill produces a light, sweet, and nutty spirit with limited peating. Tasting notes from the Flora & Fauna single malt include aromas of fresh grass, nuts, and vanilla, with a smooth, clean palate showing spice, vanilla, and nuts before a dry, slightly peppery finish. The lightness of the spirit makes it an effective blending component in J&B, contributing sweetness and approachability without dominating the blend's flavour. At 12 years old, the single malt shows how this seemingly modest spirit rewards patience in the cask.
