Tormore Distillery
Tormore Distillery is one of the most architecturally remarkable buildings in the Scotch whisky world — a Grade B listed structure on the A95 near Grantown-on-Spey in Speyside, designed in polished granite with stone balconies, copper-clad roofs, ornamental fountains, and a clock tower that plays four Scottish tunes on the quarter-hour. Construction began in 1958 and production commenced in 1960, making Tormore the first new purpose-built malt whisky distillery constructed in Scotland in the entire 20th century. In 2022 the distillery was acquired by Elixir Distillers — brothers Sukhinder and Rajbir Singh — from Pernod Ricard, beginning a new chapter of restoration and revival. A full brand relaunch is planned for 2026. Production capacity stands at 3.7 million litres annually from four wash stills and four spirit stills.

History
Tormore was commissioned in 1958 by Schenley International, operating through Long John International. The architectural brief was extraordinary for the industry: the site was designed by Alexander Cullen, with significant input from Sir Albert Richardson — then President of the Royal Academy of Arts — who brought to the project an exuberant, almost whimsical vision of what a 20th-century whisky distillery could look like. The result was unlike any other Scottish distillery: ornamental gardens, a curling pond, topiary hedges, and the musical clock tower, all executed in granite with copper detailing. The complex was completed and production began in 1960.
In 1972 the distillery expanded from four to eight stills to meet demand during the Scotch boom. In 1984 the stills were converted to wood-chip heating — a cost-saving and environmentally practical measure using forestry byproducts. Long John International was absorbed by Whitbread & Co. in 1975, and the distillery passed to Allied Distillers Ltd. In 2005 Pernod Ricard acquired Allied Domecq, bringing Tormore into the world's second-largest spirits company. Under Pernod Ricard, the vast majority of production went into blends — principally Ballantine's and Chivas Regal — with only the Tormore 14 Year Old maintained as an official single malt bottling.
The buildings were listed for their architectural and historic importance in 1986 — a recognition of their significance not merely as a working distillery but as a cultural artefact. In June 2022 Pernod Ricard agreed to sell Tormore to Elixir Distillers for an undisclosed sum. Elixir — best known for their Port Askaig and Elements of Islay independent bottlings — began restoring the distillery and developing a new brand identity. Still count was rationalised back to four wash and four spirit stills. The Blueprint 10-year-old series, released as a first step under Elixir, comprises three expressions intended to establish the character of the new Tormore era. A full brand relaunch is anticipated in 2026.
Production
Tormore draws water from the Allt an Torra Mhoir Burn, which descends from the Cromdale Hills above the distillery. Four wash stills and four spirit stills produce approximately 3.7 million litres of pure alcohol per year. The stills use wood-chip heating (converted in 1984 from direct steam), a relatively unusual arrangement in Speyside. The light, fruity character of the spirit is shaped by moderate reflux from the tall stills and clean water. During the Pernod Ricard era, spirit went almost entirely into blends; under Elixir, the focus has shifted to building a premium single malt identity.
Tasting Character
Tormore produces a light, clean, and fruit-forward Speyside spirit with a subtly nutty character. Core tasting notes include fresh green apple, ripe pear, melon, and understated vanilla, with a clean floral lift and occasional pear-drop quality on the finish. The Blueprint series presents three distinct 10-year-old expressions designed to explore different facets of the new-make character — demonstrating versatility within the inherently gentle Tormore style. Independent bottlings from specialists such as Signatory Vintage, Cadenhead's, Blackadder, and That Boutique-y Whisky Company have historically showcased older Tormore stock and reinforced its reputation for quiet elegance.
